10 Tips for Preparing Your Newborn for a Photoshoot: Insights from a Sacramento Newborn Photographer
Welcoming a new bundle of joy into the world is an exciting and heartwarming experience. Capturing these precious early moments with a professional photoshoot is a wonderful way to create timeless memories. However, getting your newborn ready for their first photoshoot can seem like a daunting task. Fear not, new parents! Here are the top 10 tips for preparing your newborn for a photoshoot, ensuring a smooth and successful session.
1. Timing is Everything
As a Sacramento newborn photographer, I recommend scheduling your newborn’s photoshoot within the 7-21 days of life. During this time, babies are sleepier and more likely to curl up into those adorable poses. Aim to schedule the session when your baby is between 10 and 14 days old to capture those sweet, peaceful moments.
2. Keep the Baby Well-Fed
A well-fed baby is a happy baby. Ensure you feed your newborn right before the photoshoot. This will help them feel content and more likely to stay asleep during the session. If your baby needs to be fed during the shoot, don’t worry, we will take a break. A full tummy leads to a relaxed baby, making for better photos. I always encourage parents to take their time with feedings and don’t feel rushed. A full feeding is best, regardless of how long it takes.
3. Dress for Success
When it comes to dressing your newborn for the photoshoot, simplicity is key. At MEP we have a large variety of props to choose from for your newborn session. You don’t need to provide anything. However some other photographers may not offer this. In that case: choose soft, comfortable outfits that are easy to remove without disturbing the baby. Avoid clothing with too many buttons or zippers. Neutral colors and simple patterns work best to keep the focus on your baby’s adorable features.
4. Create a Cozy Environment
Babies love warmth and comfort. Ensure the room where the photoshoot will take place is warm enough for the baby, especially if they will be photographed in minimal clothing or wrapped in blankets. You can use a space heater or warm blankets to create a cozy environment that will keep your baby comfortable and sleepy. At MEP, we have a designated newborn photography studio space and I will handle this for you. I’ll be certain to have the studio heated to the ideal temperature and it can be adjusted as needed throughout the session.
5. Be Prepared for Messes
Newborns are unpredictable, and messes are bound to happen. Have plenty of burp cloths, wipes, and diapers on hand to clean up any accidents quickly. Being prepared will help keep the session running smoothly without unnecessary interruptions. I tell all MEP clients not to worry about this. Messes are going to happen, but I have everything we need for a quick cleanup.
6. Bring Special Props and Keepsakes
Personalize your photoshoot by bringing along special props or keepsakes. This could be a favorite blanket, a family heirloom, or a cute stuffed animal. These items not only add a personal touch to the photos but also create a sense of comfort for your baby.
7. Keep It Quiet and Calm
Newborns are sensitive to their surroundings. Keep the environment calm and quiet to help your baby stay relaxed. Soft background music or white noise can create a soothing atmosphere. Ask everyone present to speak softly and move gently around the baby.
8. Plan for Plenty of Time
Newborn photoshoots can take several hours, as they often involve frequent breaks for feeding, changing, and soothing. Be prepared for a lengthy session and avoid scheduling any other appointments on the same day. This will allow you to stay relaxed and patient, which is crucial for a successful photoshoot.
9. Communicate with Your Photographer
Discuss your expectations and preferences with your photographer beforehand. Share any ideas you have for poses, props, or themes. As a Sacramento newborn photographer, I value clear communication with my clients to ensure everyone is on the same page. This helps in creating beautiful, personalized photos.
10. Relax and Enjoy the Moment
Most importantly, relax and enjoy the experience. Babies can sense your stress, so try to stay calm and positive. Trust your Sacramento newborn photographer to capture beautiful moments, and focus on cherishing this special time with your newborn. The more relaxed you are, the more comfortable your baby will be, resulting in better photos.
Bonus Tip: Trust the Process
Remember, your photographer is experienced in working with newborns and knows how to handle them with care and expertise. Trust their guidance and be open to their suggestions. Flexibility and patience are key to a successful photoshoot.
Preparing your newborn for a photoshoot doesn’t have to be stressful. By following these tips, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable session that results in stunning, timeless photos.
