When is the Best Time for a Maternity Photo Shoot?
If you’re expecting a little one and dreaming about capturing this sweet, fleeting season of pregnancy, you’ve probably wondered: “When is the best time for a maternity photo shoot?” This is one of the most common questions I get asked as a professional maternity and newborn photographer—and for good reason! You want to feel comfortable, look fabulous, and have those stunning baby bump photos that tell your story in the most magical way.
Let’s dive into all the things you should know to make sure you schedule your session at just the right time.
The Sweet Spot: 28–34 Weeks
Generally, the best time for a maternity photo shoot is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. Why? Because your bump is beautifully round and prominent, but you’re likely still feeling relatively comfortable and mobile. You’re glowing, you’re excited, and your body is showing off the miracle it’s creating!
By this stage, most mamas have “popped” enough that your belly is photo-ready from every angle. You’re also not quite in the “I’m ready to meet this baby now” phase, which means you’re still up for a bit of pampering and posing.
Why Timing Matters
Every pregnancy is different, and some mamas carry smaller or pop later than others. If this isn’t your first baby, your bump may show sooner, which means you might want to book on the earlier side of that 28–34 week window. On the flip side, if you’re a first-time mom and your bump is a little shy, closer to 32–34 weeks might be ideal.
Planning ahead also matters if you want to use your images for announcements, baby shower displays, or nursery decor. Giving yourself (and your photographer) enough time ensures you won’t feel rushed, and you’ll be able to enjoy the process.
What If I’m Past 34 Weeks?
Don’t panic! If you’ve found yourself a bit late to the game (hello, pregnancy brain—we get it), you can still have a beautiful session. I’ve photographed gorgeous mamas at 36, 38, even 40 weeks. The key is to be realistic with your energy level and comfort. We’ll take it slow, keep the session fun, and I’ll guide you into flattering, relaxed poses that still give you stunning results.
How to Prepare for the Perfect Shoot
Once you’ve nailed down the best time for your maternity photo shoot, here are a few tips to make it extra dreamy:
Book early. Photographers (especially in popular seasons like spring and fall) fill up fast. Booking early ensures your spot and gives us time to plan wardrobe, locations, and styling.
Dress the bump. I provide a client wardrobe full of flowy, romantic gowns designed specifically to flatter growing bellies—and yes, we play dress up!
Bring your people. Your partner, children, even pets—bring whoever makes your heart full. This moment is yours, and you get to tell your story your way.
Pamper yourself. Consider professional hair and makeup for that extra confidence boost. You deserve to feel like the queen you are!
Pregnancy is a once-in-a-lifetime experience (sometimes multiple times!) but each one is special. Choosing the best time for a maternity photo shoot allows you to capture the magic of this moment with intention and heart. Whether you’re glowing at 28 weeks or soaking in those last few days before birth, a maternity session is about freezing time in a way that you—and your baby—will treasure forever.
