When Your Toddler Isn’t a Fan of Their Cake Smash (And That’s Okay!)
As a Chico cake smash photographer, I’ve seen it all—babies who dive face-first into their cake, those who cautiously poke at the frosting, and yes, even the little ones who want absolutely nothing to do with the cake. And guess what? That’s totally normal!
Toddlers are unpredictable. One day they love bananas, the next day they act like bananas are the worst thing to ever exist. So when it comes to a cake smash session, it’s no surprise that not every one-year-old will be thrilled about the idea of getting messy with a giant cake.
This little astronaut had all the makings of an epic space-themed cake smash session—twinkling stars, a moon-inspired cake, and a mission-ready outfit. But as soon as we pulled out the camera… 🚀 Mission abort! He was not a fan, no matter how much time, encouragement, or gentle coaxing we tried.
What to Do When Your Baby Doesn’t Love Their Cake Smash
First, take a deep breath. A hesitant (or completely uninterested) toddler isn’t a failed session—it’s just part of capturing who they are in this moment. Here’s how we navigate it:
1. Give Them Time
Some babies just need a few extra minutes to warm up to a new situation. We take it slow, let them explore their surroundings, and avoid rushing them into the cake. Sometimes, stepping back and giving them space is all they need.
2. Try a Spoon or Toy
Not every child likes sticky fingers! Introducing a spoon, a favorite toy, or even letting a parent “taste test” the cake first can encourage them to get curious.
3. Let Them Lead
If the cake isn’t happening, we pivot! We can shift to portraits with fun props, family cuddles, or other interactive moments that still make for adorable milestone photos.
4. Embrace the Moment
This little guy never warmed up to his cake, or me for that matter, but you know what? His photos are still precious! We captured his curiosity, his cautious expressions, and even a few giggles despite his strong “no thank you” to the cake and the entire session. The most important thing is that we documented this milestone exactly as he experienced it.
