Every Fall, Someone Asks About Mini Sessions. Here’s My Honest Answer.

Every year, right around the time the light turns gold and everyone starts thinking about fall photos, the same question lands in my inbox: “Do you offer mini sessions?”

I get why. Mini sessions are everywhere this time of year- a quick 15 or 20 minutes, a pretty backdrop, a lower price tag. For a lot of families, that sounds like exactly what they need. And I want to say clearly: there’s nothing wrong with wanting that. It meets a real need for a lot of people.

It’s just not what I offer, and I’ve thought about this enough seasons in a row now that I want to explain why- not as a sales pitch, but as an honest look at what I actually believe makes a portrait worth having on your wall in twenty years.

A location chosen for you, not around you

Most mini session days work the same way behind the scenes: one location, booked for the whole day, with families rotating through every fifteen or twenty minutes. It makes sense from a logistics standpoint- but it also means the location was never really chosen for your family. You’re getting the spot that happened to be available that day, the same backdrop as the twelve families before you and the twelve after.

When I plan a session, the location comes from a conversation about you– your family’s personality, the season of life you’re in, the feeling you want to walk into that room and remember. Sometimes that means a specific spot in Sacramento or Roseville that means something to your family. Sometimes it means bringing everything into the studio and building the environment around your newborn. Either way, it’s chosen with your vision in mind, not slotted in because it’s where I already happen to be.

Guided from the very first conversation

A fifteen-minute session doesn’t leave room for much beyond showing up and smiling. What it can’t include is everything that happens before the camera ever comes out- the part I actually love most.

Before we ever photograph your family, we talk through wardrobe so everyone feels confident and the colors work together instead of competing. We talk through what the finished artwork could look like in your home- an album, a piece for your wall, a piece that becomes part of your family’s story instead of a file that lives on a phone. None of that happens in a rushed time slot. It happens because I’ve built the space for it, and because I want you to walk into your session already feeling prepared instead of guessing.

No clock-watching, no rushing

Anyone who’s photographed a toddler, a newborn, or a family of six, and a shy senior knows the truth: real, unguarded moments rarely show up in the first five minutes. They show up once everyone settles in- once the initial stiffness wears off and people forget the camera is even there. A tight time slot doesn’t leave room for that. I’d rather give your family the time it actually takes to get there.

I’m not the right photographer for everyone, and I’ve made peace with that

Here’s the part I used to feel like I needed to soften, and I don’t anymore: I know that means I’m not the right fit for every family, and that’s genuinely okay. If what you need this fall is something quick and budget-friendly, there are photographers who do that, and they do it well, and I hope you find one you love.

But I’d rather be fully, unapologetically excellent at the one thing I do than stretch myself thin trying to be everything to everyone. What I offer is a slower, more personal experience- one built around your family specifically, from the first conversation through the artwork that ends up on your walls. That’s the work I want to keep doing, for the families who are looking for exactly that.
