Hi guys, 

Looking at booking a newborn session is such an exciting and special time! Maybe this is your first baby or your fifth; either way it’s a moment that you won’t regret capturing. This is a fun time to wrap up your little bundle of joy in the cutest swaddles and outfits and get those adorable photos your social media feed is probably already full of! I also know that scheduling a newborn session can come with a few questions, so I decided to make a blog post to help you with the top questions I get asked about newborn sessions!

1. When should we do our newborn session?

This is a great question and an important one because the timing does matter! Typically I like to see babies in the studio between 7 and 15 days after birth. This is usually when babies sleep the most and we are more likely to get those cute “curled up” poses everyone adores! We can do them for older babies however certain poses aren’t always possible with babies as they get older.

2. When should we book our session?

I take a limited number of newborn clients each month so I recommend contacting me as you’re entering your third trimester, but earlier is ok too!  Once you’re booked, your due date will be marked on my calendar. Then, once your baby arrives you’ll notify me and we will finalize your session date. Newborn sessions can take place Monday-Thursday. Of course life happens and babies can come early or late, so we’ll just keep our communication open! If you go 2 weeks past your due date or give birth early, just keep me in the loop and we’ll work to reschedule on a date that works for both of us.

3. How long will our session be? 

Sessions are typically between 1 and 3 hours long. I know that may seem like a large span of time, but it really just depends on the baby. Some babies sleep better than others, some absolutely despise being naked, others don’t enjoy being wrapped, and some babies may need more breaks to eat or have a diaper change. Plan on at least two hours but don’t be stressed if you need to feed your baby or they’re a bit fussy. We have time for it! Essentially your little peanut decides what happens. Welcome to parenthood!

4. What happens if my baby is cranky? 

You’re in luck because my clients call me The Baby Whisperer! Most of the time I am able to soothe a cranky or fussy baby. With my experience and extensive training in newborn photography I have many tricks up my sleeve to soothe your little one. In the extremely rare event that a baby is inconsolable, we may reschedule. However I am happy to say that has only ever happened one time! So don’t worry too much about not being able to get adorable photos. It’s my job to help capture those!
