What age is best for newborn photos? That is a question that many people ask themselves. The truth of the matter is, newborns, change so quickly and look so different as they grow older that you will want to capture their cuteness while it lasts! In this blog post, we will talk about what age newborn photos should be taken and why.
Newborns are best photographed in the first few weeks of life. I typically recommend photographing them between the first 7-21 days of life. This newborn age is when they’re at their most sleepy and plump looking!
Newborn babies are the smallest they will ever be, which is why you want to capture this moment in time with them! In the first few weeks of life, newborns curl up perfectly and sleep for most of their session. During these precious few weeks after birth, they change so quickly! Believe everyone when they say, “they grow so fast!” If you wait longer than three weeks to take your photos, they may not look like what you expect. It’s much harder to get older newborns to sleep well during their sessions. They are often alert and awake, making it very difficult to pose them. And the fact of the matter is, if taken at a later age because it’s almost guaranteed that he or she has changed since then (and probably grown!).
Sometimes parents will choose to wait until their newborn is older because they want their baby’s personality captured. These are better described as milestone sessions instead of newborn sessions. So if you’re expecting and you’re wondering when your newborn session should take place, remember you want to document all their tiny little features before they change, so be sure to book your session ahead of time so you don’t miss out on this memorable experience.
