Pregnancy already comes with enough decisions. Picking outfits for your maternity photos shouldn’t be one of the stressful ones. If anything, getting dressed for this session should feel fun, flattering, and a little bit magical. These photos mark such a short season of your life, and the right wardrobe can elevate the whole experience.
As a Sacramento maternity photographer, I’ve styled so many expectant mamas who walk in feeling unsure… and walk out feeling absolutely stunning. Consider this your easy guide to choosing pieces that photograph beautifully and help you feel confident in front of the camera.
Choose Something That Makes You Feel Like You
This matters more than anything else. The best outfit is the one you feel comfortable moving in, sitting in, and breathing in.
If you’re more of a cozy-knits girl, we can lean into that soft, natural look. If you love a dramatic, flowy gown, we’ll make that moment happen. When you feel good, it shows.
Dresses Are Your Best Friend
You absolutely don’t have to wear a dress, but they tend to photograph incredibly well. The movement, the shape, the way they highlight your bump- it all comes together perfectly.
Here’s what works beautifully in maternity photos:
• Flowy, long gowns
Think soft fabrics that catch the breeze or move when you walk. They add romance and drama without trying too hard.
• Fitted dresses that show the bump
A simple, fitted gown can be stunning. It celebrates your curves and keeps the focus right where it should be.
• Off-the-shoulder styles
This cut photographs so well and adds a feminine touch without being overly dressy.
The good news? My client wardrobe is fully stocked with gowns in a variety of sizes, colors, and textures- so you don’t even have to shop unless you want to.
Stick to Soft, Neutral, or Earthy Tones
You can never go wrong with neutrals. They keep the attention on your connection instead of the clothes, and they’re flattering in every season and setting throughout Sacramento.
What you can try:
• Cream
• Beige
• Blush
• Olive
• Dusty blue
• Warm taupe
• Burnt sienna
• Soft chocolate tones
These tones look gorgeous outdoors at the Sutter Buttes, UC Davis Arboretum, the river, or any of my favorite Sacramento maternity photo locations.
Avoid Distracting Patterns
Bold prints, logos, and loud colors can pull focus away from you. Simple fabrics photograph cleaner and keep your images timeless. If you want a little visual interest, go for subtle texture- lace, ribbed knits, chiffon, or embroidery.
Don’t Forget About Your Partner
If your partner is joining your maternity session, keep them simple and coordinated.
They don’t need to match you- just complement you.
Great options include:
• A solid button-up
• A neutral sweater
• Well-fitted jeans or chinos
• Earth-tone layers
No athletic wear, bright colors, or busy patterns. Simple is always the winner.
Accessorize Lightly
A wide-brim hat, delicate jewelry, or a textured shawl can add interest without overwhelming the moment. If you’re planning a studio maternity session, we can bring in blankets, sheer fabrics, or wraps for soft, dreamy looks.
