Why Styling Matters for Your Family Photos
As a Sacramento family photographer, I know that styling plays a big role in turning moments into memories. Your wardrobe choices can add softness, texture, and flow to your session—and they help tell your family’s unique story.
In a recent session with this sweet mama and her littles, everything came together beautifully: soft tones, dreamy textures, and authentic connection. Let’s take a peek at how we created this look—so you can feel confident planning yours.
1. Choose a Color Palette That Compliments the Setting
Sacramento’s natural beauty shines in soft golden light, so your outfits should complement, not compete. Think neutral tones, soft pastels, or muted earth colors.
Pro tip: Choose 2–3 colors and pull them through everyone’s outfits in different ways.
2. Comfort Is Key for Little Ones
If they’re comfy, their joy is real. For this session, we dressed the kiddos in easy pieces—cozy sweaters, soft jeans, and layers that let them move and play.
Let kids be kids! The goal is laughter, not stiffness. Trust me—those giggles and sweet snuggles are what make the photos unforgettable.
3. Barefoot is Beautiful (or Keep It Neutral)
If the setting allows, barefoot always feels authentic and carefree. But if shoes are needed, go with something timeless and neutral—avoid flashy sneakers or bright colors.
Think: classic sandals, neutral booties, or even barefoot in the grass.
4. Coordinate—Don’t Match
We’ve all seen the matching white-shirts-and-jeans look. Let’s leave that in the early 2000s. Instead, mix and match tones and textures for a more modern and elevated look.
Example: Pull a soft floral from mom’s dress and use it in baby’s bow or big brother’s shirt tone.
