When your nephew needs photos for a school project, has a milestone birthday (hello, Sweet 16!), and his aunt happens to be a photographer… well, magic happens!
I had never done a solo session for him before, so getting to document him in his element was an absolute blast. What started as a quick request for a few photos somehow turned into a full-on session—because, let’s be honest, he should have known better!
But this got me thinking—how often do we overlook capturing individual moments for our loved ones? Why do we let milestone photo sessions slip through the cracks? We schedule family sessions, newborn shoots, and engagement photos, but what about the in-between moments? Those milestone birthdays, personal achievements, or simply celebrating who they are at this stage in life?
The Importance of Individual Portraits
Every person in a family has their own unique story, personality, and journey. While family photos are wonderful for capturing togetherness, solo sessions allow each person to shine. Whether it’s a child growing into their teenage years, a high school senior preparing for graduation, or even a grandparent celebrating a milestone birthday, individual portraits document personal growth and milestones in a way that family photos simply can’t.
When I photographed my nephew, I realized how much personality comes out when someone is in front of the camera alone. He had space to just be himself—no siblings to share the spotlight with, no parents guiding poses. It was all about him, and the images we created reflected his confidence, humor, and individuality in such a special way.
Why You Shouldn’t Wait for the “Big Moments”
Many families only think about professional photography when there’s a major life event—a wedding, a newborn’s arrival, or an annual holiday card session. But some of the most meaningful images come from those smaller, everyday milestones.
Sweet 16s, Teen Years, and Young Adulthood: These years are full of change, and having professional portraits captures the transition from childhood to adulthood beautifully. Plus, they’re great for school yearbooks, social media, and looking back on in the years to come.
Personal Achievements: Whether it’s sports, arts, or academics, every accomplishment deserves recognition. A dedicated session for a budding musician, an athlete, or an artist can boost confidence and create lasting memories.
Birthday Portraits for Any Age: Who says only babies get milestone birthday shoots? Celebrating a 30th, 40th, or even 60th birthday with a portrait session is a fantastic way to honor a person’s journey.
Making Solo Sessions Fun & Meaningful
One of the best things about individual portrait sessions is that they can be completely customized. Here are a few ideas to make them more personal:
Incorporate Their Interests: For my nephew, we included elements that reflected his personality and passions. Whether it’s a favorite hobby, sport, or personal style, bringing that into the session makes the images feel even more authentic.
Choose Meaningful Locations: A favorite park, coffee shop, or even their home can make a session feel more relaxed and true to who they are.
Encourage Outfit Changes: Letting them switch outfits allows for more variety and helps capture different sides of their personality.
Start Creating Those Memories Now
Life moves fast, and if we wait for “the perfect time” to schedule a session, we might miss out on capturing the stages that matter most. Solo portrait sessions are a gift to your loved ones—a way to honor who they are, right now, in this moment.
As a Roseville photographer, I believe every person deserves their own moment in the spotlight. If there’s someone in your family who hasn’t had their time to shine in front of the camera, maybe it’s time to change that because these are the memories you’ll treasure for years to come.
