A Yuba City Newborn Photographer: Tips On What to Wear for Newborn Family Photos

As a Yuba City newborn photographer, I often have clients asking me about what to wear for their newborn family photos. It can be tricky to select outfits that will photograph well and also be comfortable for mama, and easy for parents to put together. In this blog post, I’ll share my tips for selecting outfits for your family photo portion of your newborn session!
When selecting outfits for newborn family photos, I always recommend parents choose simplicity. You want to be careful with what you choose to wear, as you don’t want prints to overpower the baby. Steer clear of busy prints and bright colors. I like to tell parents to think of classic and timeless colors and pieces. Things that will never go out of style, so – solid colors work well.
As a Yuba City Newborn Photographer, I also recommend choosing pieces that will be comfortable for mama. Those first few weeks after delivery, moms are often in between clothing sizes while their body begins to transform from pregnancy to postpartum. I always tell my Yuba City Newborn Photography clients that it’s ok for mom to wear a maternity shirt if that’s what she’s comfortable in. If it’s too big, we can pin it back. I also let my mama’s know that they can wear one of my maternity gowns from my client closet if they’d like as well. Whatever they choose to wear, I just want them to be comfortable.
I encourage parents to bring a change of clothes. The studio is always quite warm, as that’s what helps keep the baby comfortable and warm. There are also times when I will do newborn photography parent poses with the newborn naked, and well, any time we have a naked baby, accidents can happen 🙂 But trust me, it’s always worth it!
As far as specific outfit ideas go, I’ve put together a few looks below that will hopefully give you some inspiration!
Look #01: Mama in a Lace Top + Jeans
This look is perfect for mamas who don’t want to fuss with too many clothes options on photo day. Just throw on a lace top and jeans and you’re good to go! The lace detail on the top will add a touch of elegance to your photos.
Look #02: Mama in a Flowy Dress
A flowy dress is always a good option for mamas, as it’s comfortable and easy to move around in. This type of dress also photographs really well and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
Look #03: Papa in Khakis + Button-Down Shirt
Papa can easily rock this classic look with some khakis and a button-down shirt. This outfit is perfect if you want to keep things simple but still look put together.
