What to Wear for Your Newborn Session: A Yuba City Newborn Photographer’s Guide

One of the most common questions I get from families before their newborn session is: “What should we wear?” It feels like a small detail, but the right outfits can make a big difference in how cohesive and timeless your images feel – so I want to make it as easy as possible for you.

Here’s everything I tell my Yuba City newborn clients before their session.

Keep it simple and timeless

The baby is the star. Your clothing should complement the images, not compete with them. Avoid busy prints, bold graphics, and bright colors – they draw the eye away from your newborn and tend to date quickly. Instead, think soft neutrals, muted tones, and classic pieces in cream, white, sage, dusty blue, tan, or warm grey. These colors photograph beautifully and will feel just as elegant in the images ten years from now.

Give mama some grace

Those first few weeks postpartum are a transition – your body is changing, and that’s completely normal. I always encourage moms to wear whatever feels comfortable and flattering right now, not what they think they should fit into. A flowy wrap dress, a soft linen top with jeans, or even a maternity shirt you love – all of it works. I also have a client closet with maternity gowns available if you’d like to use one. Whatever makes you feel good is the right choice.

A note on the studio temperature

My studio runs warm – intentionally. Newborns regulate their temperature best in a cozy, warm environment, and it helps them stay sleepy and settled during poses. I always recommend bringing a change of clothes for both parents, both for comfort and because, well – naked baby poses are worth it, but accidents happen!

Dad’s outfit made easy

Dads tend to overthink this. Keep it simple: neutral chinos or dark jeans, a solid-color shirt in a muted tone. No logos, no bright colors. If mom is in something light and airy, dad should stay in the same color family. That’s really all there is to it.

The family photo portion of your session

The family images from your newborn session are some of the most meaningful you’ll ever have – a real record of who your family was in those first tender days. I want you to feel confident and comfortable so you can be fully present in those moments rather than worrying about how you look. That’s my job to take care of.
