Why This Yuba City Photographer Saves These Moments for Her Own– Prom Night with My Son
As a Yuba City photographer, I’m usually behind the lens documenting those sweet, once-in-a-lifetime moments for other families—newborn snuggles, giggles during cake smashes, and heartfelt family sessions that turn into timeless artwork. I don’t typically photograph events like weddings or proms. That’s just not my lane—and honestly, it’s intentional. I save those moments for my own family. And this weekend, I got to do just that in the best, most unexpected way.
My son and a group of his buddies decided to go to prom together. No dates, no pressure—just a group of great guys making a night to remember. At first, I’ll admit, I thought it was kind of silly. A bunch of teenage boys coordinating prom plans together? Okay, sure. But then they started really planning… and I realized they were all in.
It started with a morning golf outing (because of course nothing says prom prep like smacking balls around in the sun for hours). They came home sweaty and sun-kissed, showered, and then gathered at one of the boy’s houses where the dads fired up the grill. I’m talking ribs and tri-tip—the good stuff. Full-on meat feast before prom. Because why not?
And then came my favorite part. The part that surprised me the most. These boys—who typically avoid the camera like it’s coated in glitter and emotions—actually wanted photos. They were good sports, they smiled, they posed, they laughed. And I? I was in full photographer mom mode—heart bursting, camera snapping, soaking up every second.
Now, to be clear, I don’t offer prom sessions. I’m not an event photographer, and it’s not a service I list or promote. But for my own kids? For their friends who have grown up in front of my lens whether they liked it or not? I’ll make the exception every single time.
Being a photographer in Yuba City, I’ve learned that the best photos aren’t always posed or perfect. They’re real. They’re emotional. They’re filled with stories—like a group of boys who chose to celebrate prom together, on their own terms, with BBQ sauce on their ties and golf sunburns on their faces. It’s these moments that I live for.
This night reminded me exactly why I fell in love with photography in the first place. It’s not about staging perfection—it’s about preserving connection. And while I may not shoot events professionally, I do believe in celebrating the milestones that matter most, especially when they involve the people I love most.
If you’re looking for a Yuba City photographer who values authenticity, emotion, and turning fleeting moments into artwork that lasts a lifetime—I’m here for it. Whether it’s your baby’s first birthday or your last family portrait before your senior heads off into the world, I promise to document it with heart.
And if your kid ever decides to golf, grill, and prom all in one day—call me. I’ve got the camera ready. 😉
