What to Expect at Your Yuba City Newborn Session – From Booking to Final Gallery
June 15, 2026
You’ve just found out you’re expecting – or maybe your baby is already here and you’re scrambling to book before those first two weeks are gone. Either way, you’re probably wondering: what does a newborn session actually look like? What happens when you arrive? How long does it take? What do you need to bring?
As a Yuba City newborn photographer, I’ve had the privilege of photographing hundreds of families through this tender season of life. I want you to feel completely prepared – so here’s exactly what to expect, from the moment you inquire to the day your gallery arrives.
Step 1: Booking Your Session
The best time to book your newborn session is during your second trimester – ideally around 20 to 28 weeks. Newborn sessions are scheduled for when your baby is between 7 and 21 days old, which is the window when babies are sleepiest, most curled, and easiest to pose safely. That window goes fast.
When you inquire, I’ll reach out to learn a little about your family and the vision you have for your session. I’ll also ask about your due date so we can pencil in a flexible timeframe. Once your baby arrives, you’ll contact me and we’ll confirm the exact date based on how you’re both feeling.
Before booking your session, we’ll connect for a planning consultation. This is where we talk through everything – the color palette, the mood you’re going for, any specific props or setups you love, and what you want your images to feel like.
I’ll also walk you through what to wear for the family portion of your session (hint: keep it simple and neutral – soft creams, warm whites, and muted tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby). If you’re unsure, I’m happy to look at what you’re considering and give you honest feedback.
My studio has a client closet with maternity gowns available as well, so mama always has options.
Step 3: The Morning of Your Session
A few things that make the session day smoother:
Feed your baby right before you leave the house or in the car on the way over. A full, sleepy baby is the dream for a newborn session.
Dress your baby in a loose onesie or zip-up that’s easy to remove – we’ll undress them when you arrive so they can warm up to the studio temperature.
Bring an extra outfit for yourself (and dad). The studio runs warm to keep baby comfortable, and accidents happen – both are totally normal parts of newborn photography.
Bring anything you want to include – a special blanket, a meaningful prop, a family heirloom. These personal touches make the images yours.
Step 4: During Your Session
When you arrive at my Yuba City studio, the first thing you’ll notice is how warm it is in here – intentionally so. Newborns regulate their body temperature best in a cozy, warm environment, and that warmth is what helps them stay sleepy and settled throughout the session.
Every session is completely baby-led. We move at your newborn’s pace, take breaks for feeding and soothing whenever needed, and never rush a pose that doesn’t feel right. Newborn safety is my highest priority – I’ve trained extensively in newborn posing and safety techniques, and I actively mentor other photographers in these practices. When your baby is in my hands, you can exhale.
Sessions typically run between 2 and 4 hours. I know that sounds long, but most of that time is gentle – feeding breaks, soothing, settling. You’re not being rushed through setups. You’re being cared for.
We’ll work through a mix of posed newborn images, detail shots (those tiny fingers, those perfectly curled toes), and family portraits – you holding your baby, your partner holding your baby, all of you together. These family images are some of the most treasured from the entire session.
Step 5: After Your Session – Your Gallery and Artwork
Within a week of your session, we will meet for your gallery reveal and ordering appointment. I’ll walk you through it personally and help you choose the images that will become part of your family’s heirloom collection.
I believe photographs belong on walls and in albums – not buried in a phone or forgotten on a hard drive. That’s why I offer handcrafted albums, framed wall art, and museum-quality prints designed to preserve these moments in a form that will last for generations.
These are the images you’ll look at twenty years from now and remember exactly how impossibly small they were. That’s what I’m here to create for you.
