By Megan Escheman | Sacramento Newborn Photographer
You’ve booked your newborn session. The nursery is prepped, the tiny outfits are washed, and you’re equal parts excited and exhausted. And then someone asks: “So what are you wearing?” It’s one of the most overlooked parts of newborn session prep – and one of the most important. The good news? As a studio newborn photographer, I take care of all the props and outfits for your baby. Your one job is showing up – and knowing what you and your family should wear to complete the look.
Here’s exactly what to wear for your Sacramento newborn session.
The Golden Rule: Keep It Simple
Newborn sessions are all about the baby – and the connection between your baby and your family. The goal of your outfits is to complement that, not compete with it. When clothing is simple and cohesive, your eye goes straight to the faces, the tiny hands, the expressions. When it’s busy or bright, the clothing becomes a distraction.
Simple always wins in newborn photography.
One less thing to stress about: I provide all props, wraps, and outfits for your newborn. Everything is carefully curated to complement the studio setup – so all you need to focus on is what mom, dad, and any siblings will wear.
What Works Best: Solids, Neutrals, and Texture
Solid colors are your best friend. They photograph cleanly, they don’t date quickly, and they keep the focus where it belongs – on your family.
The color palette I recommend most:
Neutrals – cream, ivory, white, tan, and camel are timeless and photograph beautifully in a studio setting
Greys – light grey, charcoal, and heather tones are versatile and work well for both moms and dads
Black – a classic that always looks polished and intentional
Soft, muted tones – dusty blush, sage, soft terracotta, and warm mauve can work beautifully when kept understated
The key is to coordinate, not match exactly. Mom in cream, dad in grey, and a sibling in a soft neutral all work together without looking like you ordered from a family portrait package in 2005.
Adding Dimension with Texture
Solid doesn’t have to mean boring. Texture is your best tool for adding visual interest without introducing busy patterns.
Things that photograph beautifully:
Chunky knit or ribbed fabrics – a cream ribbed dress or a textured sweater adds dimension while staying clean
Linen and lace – soft, organic textures that look elegant in portraits
Layering – an open cardigan over a simple top, or a wrap-style dress, adds depth without distraction
Flowy fabrics – for moms especially, soft and flowy silhouettes tend to photograph more flatteringly than stiff or structured pieces
If you’re unsure whether a texture is too much, lay it flat next to your other family members’ outfits and step back. If it reads as calm and cohesive from a distance, you’re good.
What to Avoid
A few things that are worth leaving in the closet for newborn day:
Plaid and stripes – even subtle ones. Patterns like these tend to create visual “noise” in photos and pull attention away from faces.
Florals – similarly, floral prints (even small ones) compete with the softness of a newborn session and can look dated quickly in portraits.
Bright or neon colors – red, royal blue, bright yellow, hot pink. These colors dominate a photo and can cast color reflections on your baby’s skin that are difficult to correct in editing.
Graphic tees or visible logos – these date photos almost immediately and almost always look out of place in a portrait setting.
Overly casual or overly formal – you don’t need to be in a ball gown, but pajamas won’t feel right either. Think: relaxed, polished, and comfortable.
A Note on Dad and Siblings
Dads tend to overthink this. The short version: dark jeans or neutral trousers, a simple solid tee or button-down in grey, cream, white, or black, and clean shoes. Done.
For siblings, mirror the same neutral palette. A soft cream dress, grey pants and a white top, or a simple muted outfit keeps everyone cohesive. Avoid anything with characters, cartoons, or bright patterns — even if it’s their favorite shirt.
Practical Tips for Session Day
Comfort matters. You’ll be sitting, leaning, holding, and snuggling for an extended period. Make sure whatever you choose is something you can move in naturally.
Avoid tight waistbands or anything that leaves marks on your skin – these show up in photos more than you’d expect.
Bring an extra option if you’re unsure. I’d rather help you choose between two outfits on session day than have you stressed about the one you picked.
Nursing-friendly tops are totally fine – function matters, especially in those early weeks.
