When should you take your maternity photos? This is a question that many soon-to-be mamas ask themselves. The answer, of course, depends on a number of factors. Here are a few things to consider when deciding when to have your maternity photo session.
The first thing to think about is how you want your photos to look. Do you want a round, full belly? Or are you hoping for more of a natural, curves-and-all look?
Generally speaking, the best time for a round, full belly is between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. This is when you’re likely to be the most comfortable, too. This ensures that you’ll have that nice round belly that we all want for maternity photos. But you also want to be sure to get your photos done before you’re too uncomfortable and swollen. Each pregnancy is vastly different, so while some mamas may have a very defined bump at 28 weeks, others might not have that fullness until closer to 36 weeks. If this is a second or third (or more) pregnancy, then mama’s bump may develop sooner than the previous pregnancy. This is something that we will decide by each individual client.
You want to try to avoid waiting until the last few weeks of your pregnancy for a couple of reasons. One, you may go into labor at any time and miss the opportunity to get these photos done. Secondly, You may be too uncomfortable in those last few weeks to enjoy the experience of maternity photos.
Another factor to consider is the time of year and the weather. If you live in an area with harsh winters, you may want to schedule your maternity session outside of the ideal period or consider doing an indoor studio portrait session. Or if you tend to get hot and sweaty easily, you may want to consider this when you schedule your maternity session. You will also want to take into consideration how you react to pregnancy in different weather conditions.
All of these factors play a role in deciding when is the best time for your maternity session. When you book your maternity session with me, we will discuss all of these factors and decide together what the best time for your session will be.
